Hello Today I installed a new CPU fan on my AMD 1.1Duron Processor. Now the PC is very slow and when I checked teh processor speed it stated it was running at 498mhz. Have I screwed my CPU? Glenn. Posted:, 07:25 PM The manual that came with your Motherboard will have that information. Steve 'Glenn Kelly' wrote in message news:%[email protected].

Have I screwed my CPU? Glenn. Posted:, 07:38 PM Certainly, the information requested is in the manual which should have been read. Since you asked, you apparently didn't know about the use of the manual, 'jest' was doing you a favor. I dont have a manual for the motherboard. If anyone can help me here, it would be very much appreciated. Where can I find teh place to change the FSB. All I did was add a CPU fan, and I did take the CPU out to clean the residue of the old sealant stuff off and re seat it. I have Award Bios 'Jim Macklin' wrote in message news:%[email protected]. Posted:, 07:52 PM 'Glenn Kelly' wrote in message news:[email protected]. hmm.erm.should I be thanking you for that piecie of information? Glenn - There are two main 'places' where the speed of your processor could be set.
Via 'jumpers' (which are little plastic bits that complete circuits on your motherboard). There are two sets of jumpers that may be involved if your processor speed is set via jumpers: (1) processor front side bus and (2) multiplier. If your motherboard uses this method, you may have inadvertently removed one or more of these jumpers when you changed your CPU fan. Via settings in your motherboard's BIOS. If your motherboard uses this method, you may have inadvertently cleared your BIOS, resetting it to failsafe defaults. Since we are not mind-readers, there is no way anyone in this group can currently instruct you as to which method is employed on your computer and how to correct the problem.
You haven't even told us who makes your computer, who makes your motherboard and what your motherboard model is. Your motherboard manual is the ONLY source of this information.
I can tell you that for a 1.1 GHz Duron, your Front Side Bus should be 100 MHz (doubled to 200 MHz for Double Data Rate) and your Multiplier should be 5.5 (200 times 5.5 is 1100 MHz. If the motherboard was installed by the computer manufacturer, you will need to contact them for information regarding how to set the processor speed. Further.
Some motherboards will need the FSB set at 100 MHz for a Duron with a Multiplier of 11 (100 times 11 is 1100 MHz). Your speed being about 500 MHz bears this out as a failsafe default. Many motherboards will default to a 100 MHz Front Side Bus with a multiplier of 5. You're reporting 498 MHz as your processor speed. Which, due to rounding, sure sounds like a 500 MHz Failsafe default. And this is very likely set in your system BIOS.
Look for a key to press (such as DEL, F1, F2, etc.) when you first turn on your system to gain access to the BIOS setup screens. Posted:, 08:05 PM Thank you Jeff for your very useful and helpful information the Mother baord is QDI Kinetiz 7E I very much doubt I removed any jumpers as the only thing i took out was the fan and the CPU. Reseated and added the fan. I have looked in the bios and cannot see anything that has changed, Would I have inadvertantly damaged the CPU? If so, would it have changed the rating to 458?
